To ensure the success of Operation Market Garden, the allies had to take the bridge of Arnhem. But the lightly armed airborne troops were no match for the two SS Panzer Divisions present in the area.. After desperate fighting and many deaths, the Arnhem bridge turned out to be EEa bridge too far.

De slag om Arnhem
The Battle of Arnhem was part of the much larger operation codenamed “Market Garden”. Tijdens deze operatie moesten drie Airborne divisies vanaf de Belgische grens bij Lommel tot Arnhem de bruggen over de diverse waterwegen veroveren waarna het 30e Britse Corps naar Midden-Nederland kon oprukken. Part of the 2nd battalion of paratroopers of the 1st British Airborne Division reached the Rhine Bridge in Arnhem and held out there for four days.

After three days of fighting, the airborne soldiers withdrew towards Oosterbeek. This is the last defensive stronghold of the British and Polish soldiers during the Battle of Arnhem. The area that is surrounded by the Germans around Oosterbeek is what the British call the 'perimeter'.. The territory so stubbornly defended by the Airbornes, then has the shape of an elongated horseshoe. The open part of this horseshoe is formed by the Oosterbeek floodplain in which the Oude Kerk is also located, with the Rhine to the south. After nine days of heavy fighting, the Airbornes evacuate the perimeter and retreat across the Rhine. From the hold 12.000 British and Poles only reached a small 2.300 soldiers across the Rhine. Arnhem turned out to be a bridge too far.

On Sunday morning 16 October 2022 organizes Battlefield Tours in the context of the 78th commemoration of the Battle of Arnhem in Market Garden in september 1944 a battlefield tour through the southern perimeter of Oosterbeek.
