To ensure the success of Operation Market Garden, the allies had to take the bridge of Arnhem. But after desperate fighting and many deaths, the Arnhem bridge turned out to be a bridge too far (A Bridge Too Far). In 1976 This operation was made into a film under the direction of Richard Attenborough. in june 1977 became the famous movie: “A bridge too far” released.

 

Operation Market Garden

Operatie Market Garden eindigde bij Arnhem. De brug over de Rijn bij deze stad was de laatste brug die de geallieerden moesten innemen om het succes van de operatie te verzilveren. It is expected that the soldiers who were dropped at Arnhem could last a maximum of four days. Uiteindelijk kregen ze negen dagen van bloedige gevechten te verduren. De opeenstapeling van problemen bleek teveel voor de luchtlandingstroepen. Ze leden enorme verliezen en waren uiteindelijk niet in staat hun doel te bereiken. Op zaterdag 4 september 2022 organizes Battlefield Tours in the context of the 78th commemoration of the Battle of Arnhem in Market Garden in september 1944 een battlefield tour per bus door Arnhem, Oosterbeek en omgeving.

Tijdens deze tour in Arnhem en Oosterbeek bezoeken we de landing- en droppingterreinen van de 1e Britse Airborne divisie, volgen daarna de opmarsroutes van de bataljons naar de Rijnbrug en omgeving in Arnhem, het St Elisabeths’ Gasthuis en de wijk Lombok en de Rijnbrug om vervolgens te eindigen bij de omsingeling van de Airborne troepen rondom het hoofdkwartier in hotel Hartenstein en de gevechten rond de N.H. kerk in Oosterbeek-Laag. Ter afsluiting brengen we een bezoek aan de Airborne begraafplaats in Oosterbeek.

The tours start at 09.30 hours from the Carpool Wolfheze Planken Wambuis, Amsterdamseweg. De busrit wordt afgewisseld met korte wandelingen. Zowel in de bus als op verschillende plaatsen in het terrein geven gidsen uitleg over de slag om Arnhem en tonen u de sporen van deze gevechten die na 78 jaar nog steeds te zien zijn.
