On the night of 14 on 15 April a group of SD and SS men fled to Zoutkamp to flee the fighting in the city of Groningen. A Canadian victory would have most of them arrested. However, they were prepared for this, because they had come up with a flight plan to flee to Germany via Schiermonnikoog.

Flight from Zoutkamp
In this group of 165 men and women included the infamous Robert Lehnhoff, better known as 'the executioner of Groningen' and Peter Schaap, who had shot ten resistance men a few days earlier at Bakkeveen. The high-ranking men and women went to Zoutkamp by car, while a large part had to make the trip to West Groningen by bike. Early in the morning, four fully loaded ships sailed out of the port of Zoutkamp.

Schiermonnikoog
The refugees stayed on Schiermonnikoog for more than a month, they only surrendered at the end of May. Op zondag 22 april 1945 Zoutkamp was liberated by the Canadians. They came from the Frisian side and shot a few times towards the port of Zoutkamp, the Germans fled to the harbor area and were captured there. However, no move was made to go to Schiermonnikoog and pick up the group of SD and SS.. In the end it was resistance fighter Herman Kloppenborg from Winschoten who took on this job – in the uniform of a Canadian major.. On 31 May 1945 the group was picked up from Schiermonnikoog. In the afternoon they were brought ashore in Zoutkamp. The men and women were under great interest of the local residents, put in trucks and transported to Groningen, where they were locked up in the House of Detention. Look after 11 June the last German soldiers left Schiermonnikoog.

During this exclusive tour you will sail with the historic shrimp cutter ZK 4 Albatross from Zoutkamp to Schiermonnikoog and back. During a bike ride on the island you will get to know the important war history of the island and the story of the SD. You will also visit the Seeburg bunker, who served as commando during World War II- and communications bunker served in the Schlei . radar position. From this bunker the radar information was forwarded to the division command bunker Diogenes in Schaarsbergen/Arnhem, from which fighter planes subsequently flew. Leeuwarden airport were alerted. The museum offers a new exhibition every two years on a specific topic related to the Second World War in and around Schiermonnikoog. The impressive story is told during this tour by the guides of the Visserijmuseum Zoutkamp and Bunkermuseum Schlei.
